Only one Romanian still standing at Roland Garros

02 June 2015

Horia Tecau is the only Romanian tennis player who managed to qualify to the upper stages of this year’s French Open at Roland Garros.

Tecau has made it to the semi-finals in the mixed doubles competition, together with Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik. He also made it to the men’s doubles quarterfinals, together with Jean Julien Rojer.

Tecau, 30, is only playing doubles and is currently 10th in the ATP doubles ranking. He has won nine team titles in his career, including one this year, in Rotterdam.

None of the five Romanians who entered the main draw in the women’s competition didn’t make it to the quarterfinals. Andreea Mitu was the last to exit the competition, in the last sixteen.

Mitu, who was 100th in the WTA ranking before Roland Garros, had her best performance of her career at Roland Garros, winning four matches before being eliminated by another outsider, Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck (no. 88 WTA).

Irina Begu was eliminated by Czech champion Petra Kvitova in the third round while Romanian star Simona Halep and Alexandra Dulgheru fell in the second round.
