Former Romanian PM wants to launch new party this week

01 July 2014

Former Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu will launch a new party this week, called the Reforming Liberal Party.

Tariceanu, who used to lead the National Liberal Party (PNL) but who gave up on PNL membership earlier this year, managed to gather several MPs unhappy with the merger between the PNL and the Democrat Liberal Party PDL.

Two former ministers, and ten other MPs will join Tariceanu. However, members of the PNL warn that those who leave the party to join Tariceanu’s project are in fact playing a game for the ruling party the Social Democrat Party (PSD).

On the other hand, those who are leaving say the PNL is a chaotic party nowadays, a battle ground between groups which support the new PNL leader Iohannis, and former leader Crin Antonescu.

In order to register a new political party, the signatures of 25,000 supporters from at least 18 counties across Romania are needed.
