Foreign investors: UEFA football championship in Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria could create 100,000 new jobs

18 March 2011

The Foreign Investors Council in Romania (FIC), an organization that gathers representatives of over 100 of the biggest private companies in Romania, has proposed a list of projects that should be completed and that could provide 500.000 jobs on a medium term in Romania. Among the important investments on the FIC list are infrastructure projects like airports, highways, hotels, stadiums, needed so that Romania could host the European football championship.

Romania could attract investments worth EUR 10 billion in the next ten years, which would lead to a growth of the GDP with 2.9 percent on a medium term, if it organizes the UEFA football championship in 2020-2024, together with Bulgaria or Hungary, according to FIC's calculations. This project will create approximately 97.500 new jobs on medium term and will increase the budget by 3.8 percent. Other projects high on FIC's list are the Nadlac-Sibiu highway, which will link Western Europe to the Black Sea, the Bucuresti-Brasov highway and the Tarnita hydropower.
