EC president believes Romania is returning to the right track

08 February 2017

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said that Romania seems to be in the process of "recovering".

He held a common press conference with the Prime Minister of France Bernard Cazeneuve.

Juncker said that he had had extensive talks with the Romanian president at Malta, and that he wanted Romania to recover. He also said that the country seems to be returning on the right track, reports local Hotnews.ro.

The European Commission President said that he and the First Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans reacted last week to what was happening in Romania through a press release that warned Romania not to take a path that didn’t not comply with the minimal demands of the European Union. Cazeneuve said that he agreed with Juncker on this topic.

One day earlier, European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said that Romania registered a regress in proving the irreversibility of justice reforms, which might have affected the chances of lifting the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) until the end of the current European Commission’s mandate.
