Earthquake in North Italy, eight reported dead already

29 May 2012

Another earthquake has struck Northern Italy, again near Bologna, after the one nine days ago. Eight people are already reported to have been killed and there are fears the body count could rise as rubble is cleared. The magnitude quake struck at 09:00 local time, with the epicenter at a depth of 9.6 km and around 40 km NNW of Bologna, according to the US Geological Survey, which monitors seismic activity around the world.

Speaking earlier by telephone and quoted by Reuters Italia, the mayor one of the towns affected, San Felice sul Panaro, said “Unfortunately we are the victims, we already have one person seriously injured and there are people under the rubble.” The town was one of the worst affected by the previous earthquake, which struck the region 9 days ago. The quake was felt across Northern Italy, as far away as Florence, Milan, Turin, Venice and Ravenna.

People in the area are already sleeping in emergency accommodation, after the previous earthquake, and numerous aftershocks are reported, some measuring over 4.5 on the Richter scale.
