Drought cuts Romania’s honey production by a third

08 July 2014

Romania’s honey production this year will be at least 30 percent below the yearly average due to the extreme drought in some parts of the country. This could determine an increase in the final sale price by 10 to 15 percent, according to estimates from the Association of Beekeepers in Romania.

“I think that the total honey production this year will be between 60 and 65 percent of the yearly average of 20,000 – 22,000 tons. I estimate it to be between 14,000 and 16,000 tons. It all depends on the results on the sunflower honey production,” said Ioan Fetea, president of the Association of Beekeepers in Romania, quoted by Agerpres newswire.

He added that the price of honey will grow, with production prices for acacia honey already 35 percent higher and prices for polyfloral honey are up 15 to 20 percent. However, he doesn’t expect the price for final consumers to increase more than 10 - 15 percent as honey consumption in Romania is still very low.
