Daughter of former Romanian minister Dijmarescu allegedly dies from overwork in Japan

01 June 2012

The 36-year old Romanian Alina Dijmărescu, the daughter of former Romanian Minister Eugen Dijmarescu, was found dead of a heart attack in a hotel room on Okinawa island, Japan. Media reports suggest the death was caused by overwork.

The woman graduated from the University of Economic Studies in Bucharest, knew six foreign languages and had worked for Lehman Brothers in the past. In Japan, death by overworking is frequent, and has a special word: karoshi.

Eugen Dijmarescu is currently the head of the Deposits Guarantee Fund in Romania. In the past, he was Ambassador to Japan, which was when his daughter moved there.

Romania too saw a much debated case of death by overwork in 2007, when Raluca Stroescu, an Ernst & Young employee, then 31, died of exhaustion after several weeks of working without a break.
