Danube reaches lowest flow in 32 years

19 August 2015

The Danube has reached the lowest flow in the last 32 years due to the drought, said one of the Romanian Waters National Administration’s directors. The flow, however, could start growing as of today, according to estimations of the Waters Administration, reports local Digi24.

Romania went through a similar situation in 2013, when the Danube’s flow reached 3,000 cubic meters per second, but it hasn’t seen a flow of 2,300 cubic meters per second since 1983.

The naval traffic on Danube is difficult, and the 20,000 people which live in Calafat, a city in Dolj County, on the river Danube, receive running water only four hours in the morning and four hours in the evening. Hydro power producer Hidroelectrica’s output was also affected by the drought, as its biggest power plants are located on the Danube.
