Bulgaria plans to forbid use of Bulgarian - registered cars by Romanian owners

28 September 2011

Romanian cars registered in Bulgaria have become a real problem for the Bulgarian authorities, according to Borislav Bogoev, deputy chairman of the Financial Supervision Commission and head of the Insurance Supervision Department, quoted by Focus Agency. If a car is registered in Bulgaria but it’s mostly driven abroad and it gets involved in a car accident, a claim is made to Bulgarian insurers or to the Guarantee Fund, if there is no insurance, and this is a capital flow out of Bulgaria, he added. According to him the claims made to the Guarantee Fund so far are worth more than about EUR 32 million (BGN 65 million), writes Focus Agency.

The Parliament in Sofia will soon adopt certain legal amendments that will make it impossible for a car whose owner is domiciled in another country to continue to carry a registration number from Bulgaria, according to Agerpres.

According to Ionel Dima, general manager of Avus International Insurance Broker, accidents in Romania which involve cars registered in Bulgaria went up 20 times in 2010, compared to 2005. There were 3,000 accidents involving cars registered in Bulgaria last year in Romania.
