Bucharest subway operator wants to change access system

09 September 2015

Bucharest subway operator Metrorex wants to upgrade the system which allows access to the subway network in Romania’s capital. The access will be done through swing gates equipped with devices for contactless and magnetic cards. The turnstiles are to be replaced in 2016.

The project targets 41 subway stations, reports local Profit.ro. Its value is estimated at RON 186 million (EUR 42 million), VAT included. The contract will be financed with external non-reimbursable funds and money from the state budget.

In July, Metrorex received offers from Spain’s Sociedad Iberica de Construcciones Electricas, and the association made of TIAB, UTI Grup and Logic IT Consult for this contract. The winning bid is yet to be announced.

Up to 700,000 people use the metro system every day. Metrorex operates a network of over 69 km of double-track, distributed on four main lines and 51 stations. A fifth line is currently under construction, which will link Drumul Taberei neighborhood and Eroilor. It will have 10 stations.
