Bucharest municipality to invest EUR 31 mln in new orthopaedic hospital wing

30 June 2014

The new hospital the Bucharest city hall is currently building near the “Foisor” hospital will cost EUR 31 million and will be finalized in 2016, according to Bucharest’s mayor Sorin Oprescu. The new hospital (photo, rendering) will be part of the orthopaedic hospital at Foisorul de Foc, which is now controlled by the municipality.

This will be the first state hospital to be built in Romania’s capital in the last 25 years, after the fall of the communist regime.

“Up to 20 surgeries will be possible each day, of which many of great complexity. The number of beds will grow by more than a hundred and the number of surgery rooms will grow from five to eight,” said Oprescu.

Parts of the existing Foisorul de Foc hospital were demolished, to make room for the new hospital wing.

The Bucharest municipality is also building a new paediatric hospital close to the National Arena football stadium. This should be the first emergency paediatric hospital in Bucharest. It will add some 120 new beds and 10 surgery rooms to the Gomoiu hospital, which is 100 years old.
