Romania’s organic agriculture goes up by a third

The organically cultivated areas in Romania have increased by 37% since 2010 until now, but their share remains low, of only 2.1% of the total agricultural land, said Agriculture Minister Daniel Constantin.

The areas which are organically cultivated amount to about 290,000 sqm, reports local Agerpres.

The number of operators in organic farming has increased from 1,000 to 25,000 during this period, and has now stabilized somewhere from 13,000 to 14,000 operators.

In the cattle sector, Romania has about 34,000 animals which have been raised in an organic system. It also has about 121,000 sheep and goats and 58,000 chickens reared in this system.

Some 10% of the total wine produced in Romania is also made organically.
