Romanian Simona Halep loses hard fought battle with Serena Williams in Miami semifinals

Romanian tennis ace Simona Halep lost her match against the world’s number one, American Serena Williams, in the semifinals of the Miami tennis tournament.

Halep, who’s number three in the WTA ranking of the best women’s tennis players in the world, put up a fight against the American champion as the two battled for more than two hours. Serena Williams son the first set 6-2, but Halep recovered and managed to win the second act, 6-4.

In the last set, Serena took an early lead over Simona, 3-0. Then it was 4-1 and 5-2. And then Halep found the resources for a comeback, winning three consecutive games, including a break, and levelling the situation at 5-5.

But the American had the final say in the match and won the last two games to make it to the final of the tournament. The match ended 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 for Serena.

This also put an end to Simona Halep’s wonderful month in the U.S., where she won the Indian Wells tournament and then made it to the semifinals of the Miami tournament, after a total of ten consecutive wins.

Simona Halep will get 390 WTA points for reaching the semifinals and will keep her third spot in the WTA ranking, after Serena Williams and Russia’s Maria Sharapova. She is also second in this year’s Road to Singapore ranking, having won 3,000 WTA points this year.
