A 22.5-km section of the Sibiu-Orastie highway will be closed for repairs from next Monday until the end of October, according to Romania’s National Highways Company CNADNR.

Italian constructor Impregilo built the 22.5-km section, which was only inaugurated in November 2014 and now needs repairs due to several large cracks. These were not caused by a phenomenon of sliding land, but rather by a structural subsidence, related to a poor execution of the highway works, between 2012 and 2013, according to CNADNR.

The first cracks in the highway appeared only two weeks after it was inaugurated, in November 2014 (just before the presidential elections). CNADNR has tried to fix the cracks and had the traffic restricted, but the rift only got wider.

The highways company recommends drivers to choose the alternative route DN 1 between Saliste and Cunta while the highway is closed.
