Romanian gymnastics team coaches' contracts to expire after Olympic games

08 August 2012

Romania's gymnastics team coaches Mariana Bitang (in picture) and Octavian Bellu will end their contract with the Romanian Gymnastics federation after the ongoing Olympic Games in London, but haven't decided yet on the next steps in their careers, they said in a press conference.

“I didn't say I plan to quit and go abroad. I don't know where the information surfaced from. […] We have not discussed what we will do, here or before the Olympic Games. Everyone needs rest to take decisions,” said Bitang.

Their contracts expire at the end of this month, and the Federation will devise a strategy for the next stage, “which could include some people or not,” according to Bellu. “The biggest worry should not be about the technicians, the coaches, but about the gymnasts,” he went on.

Gymnastics has brought Romania three medals at the Olympic Games in London, a gold for Sandra Izbasa in the vault, silver for Catalina Ponor for her floor exercises and a bronze medal in the team event.

Bitang, who turned 50 on August 3, and Bellu, who is also her partner, have together brought Romania over 250 medals in different competitions.
