Romania to pay farmers EUR 50 mln in compensation for drought damages

23 August 2012

Romanian farmers whose crops were affected by drought this year will receive damage payments from the Government, that needs EUR 50 million to pay them all, according to the Agriculture Ministry. The Government has some of the money but will have to re-distribute funding from other projects to cover the rest.

Farmers will receive a compensation of RON 100 per hectare (or some EUR 22), for maximum 10 hectares of land. Money will come in a single tranche, starting with November 15.

Eligibility for payments will be established based on records of the Agency for Agricultural Payments (APIA), where farmers need to submit requests. Those who receive the financial compensation have to continue framing on those plots for at least three years.

Around 3.7 million hectares of land in Romania were affected by the drought this year, covering around 40 percent of the agricultural area. Most affected were corn – 81 percent, and sun flower, 45 percent.
