Romania’s economy uses 5.9% more electricity in Jan-Nov

14 January 2019

Romania’s economy used 41.25 TWh of electricity in January-November last year, which was 5.9% more than in the same period of 2017.

This compares to an industrial output advance of around 4% (November industrial data was not released yet), implying certain rise of the energy intensity that is in line with the advance of energy-intensive industries (car production, glass and cement production).

In contrast, households used 12% less electricity compared to the previous year, namely 9.19 TWh.

More energy-efficient devices starting with LED bulbs up to the replacement of on/off air conditioning units with inverter ones paid dividends. The government-subsidised programme of replacing energy-intensive home appliances as well as the voluntary optimisation of energy use driven by expensive electricity will predictably keep depressing the household consumption.

Overall, the final electricity consumption in Romania increased by only 2% to 50.91 TWh.

On the production side, the hydropower production soared by 27.7% compared to 2017, to 17.02 TWh in January-November out of a total domestic production of 58.81 TWh (+2.1%).
