Over 30 volunteers to put Danube’s Romanian shore on the European map of cycle tourism

26 June 2013

Over 30 Romanian and Bulgarian volunteers, part of the Cycling Romania team, are biking over 800 km along the Danube’s Romanian shore between June 24 and July 9, 2013. The young volunteers will search for cycling routes in seven counties in the Danube area, which will later be promoted on a portal to be launched this September.

“We thought of this project because many foreign tourists that came to visit Romania on bikes have complained of a lack of information. We aim to provide information to both foreigners and Romanians, about the cycling routes on the Danube’s Romanian shore. We want to put Romania on the European map of Cycle tourism, considering this activity brings annual revenues of EUR 44 billion in Europe. Next year we’ll continue to promote this area, with the Dobrogea region and the Danube Delta,” said Mircea Crisbasanu, the project’s coordinator.

In the first week of the tour, the volunteers will gather information about cycling routes and their degree of difficulty, but they will also look for stories about the people and information about sightseeing and accommodation.

Between June 20 and July 9, 2013, the volunteers will be at the Culture Port Cetate, where the information gathered on the road will be organized in order to be presented on a national portal that will promote Romania as a destination for cycling tourism. The website will be both in Romanian and English.

People interested in this project and who have the necessary equipment can join the team along the way. Those interested in the tour’s results can attend the events to be organized between July 5 and July 7 at the Culture Port Cetate. Find more information here (in Romanian).
