Romania’s Orăştie Fortress to be revamped with EU funds

09 January 2019

The Orăştie Fortress, in Huneoara county, will be restored and consolidated as part of a RON 22.5 million (EUR 4.8 million) project backed by EU funds.

The project is rolled out by the Orăştie City Hall in a partnership with the Orăştie Reformed Parish and the Orăştie Evangelical Parish. The City Hall will implement the project, Ziarul Financiar reported.

The project is due to be finalized within 44 months.

The fortress has been documented since the 1544. The walls of the fortress host a 14th century reformed church and the 19th century evangelical church. Also inside the fortress, an ecclesiastical rotunda (a circular chapel) was discovered. This is considered one of the oldest medieval churches on Romania’s current territory. The Culture Ministry lists the fortress as a historical monument.

Orăştie was one of the places where Saxons settled in Transylvania.
