Former deputy governor of Romania's central bank could get 30-day arrest

03 August 2016

Romania’s High Court of Cassation and Justice will decide on August 11 whether the former central bank deputy governor Bogdan Olteanu, accused of bribery, remains under home arrest.

On July 29, the supreme court decided that Olteanu would be investigated under home arrest. The National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), however, challenged the court’s decision and demanded a 30-day arrest for Olteanu. Its appeal will be judged on August 11.

The former deputy governor has been charged with influence peddling. He allegedly demanded and received a EUR 1 million bribe from the investor Sorin Ovidiu Vintu, in order to help him appoint the former journalist Liviu Mihaiu as governor of the Danube Delta, according to prosecutors. Vintu had economic interests in the Danube Delta.
