Former Cluj County Council head gets 6.5-year jail sentence

13 May 2016

Romanian politician Horia Uioreanu, the former head of the Cluj County Council, was sentenced to 6 years and 6 months in jail, no parole, for bribery. The sentence is not final.

The anticorruption prosecutors charged Uioreanu with bribery. The investigators found that the former county council president took between 10% and 15% of the value of public works allotted by the local authority.

Uioreanu apparently asked a company owner to pay RON 700,000 worth of bribes for a RON 4 million contract. He also allotted a contract for work at the Cluj International Airport to a local businessman without any public tender procedure and tried to cover this up by ordering a public tender after the work was finished, according to the prosecutors.
