European Gymnastics Championships: Romanian wins gold in floor final

Romanian gymnast Marian Dragulescu won the men’s floor final of the European Gymnastics Championships taking place in Cluj-Napoca. This is the first medal for Romania at this competition. Dragulescu will also compete in the men’s vault final tomorrow.

The Romanian got a score of 14.500 points in the floor exercise. Russian Dmitri Lankin was second with 14.466, and Israeli Alexander Shatilov came third, with cu 14.400.

Marian Dragulescu, 36, is one of the most successful Romanian male gymnasts. He won his first international gold medal at the European Championships in Bremen, in 2000, where he won the floor final. Since then, he has won ten European titles and eight world titles in the floor and vault competitions.

He also won three Olympic medals at the 2004 Athens Olympics: silver in the floor final, and bronze in the vault and team finals. Last year, he finished fourth in the vault final at the Rio Olympics.

Romania also hopes to get at least one medal in the women’s competition, where Larisa Iordache and Catalina Ponor compete in the beam final tomorrow.
