Bucharest Otopeni airport manager, re-appointed after dismissal following illegal taxi scandal

03 January 2013

Romanian Cornel Poteraşu, the former manager of the Henri Coanda airport in Bucharest, who was dismissed after the death of a Japanese tourist mid-2012, was recently re-named GM for the airport. The new Transport Minister Relu Fenechiu said Poterasu was not to blame for the death of the tourist, as the airport security was supervised by the Domestic Affairs Ministry.

The Japanese student murdered after landing on the Otopeni – or Henri Coanda airport stirred debate about the illegal taxis at the airport and about the insecurity faced by tourists landing in Romania. The Japanese student was helped by a young Romanian find a cab- he later on killed her in the woods near the airport in August last year.

The Bucharest airport should soon have private management, the minister said. This would be the second company where private management will be in place. The first was CFR – the Romanian railways, where the private management placing however was not successful. Read more about it here.

Following the Japanese tourist murder, Romania's Domestic Affairs Ministry created a permanent Gendarmes office at the airport. More about it here.
