Study: average download speed tripled in Romania this year

Romania ranked the 26th of 221 countries in terms of average download speed, which nearly tripled from last year to 61.08 Mbps, according to a study conducted by cable.co.uk.

Romania thus gained 11 places in the ranking, after plunging 33 from the 5th position in 2018 to the 37th place in 2019.

The study measured the average Internet speed in 221 countries and territories between May 9, 2019, and May 8, 2020.

Over the same period, the average global speed increased to 24.83 Mbps - more than double the previous year's average.

Among the neighboring countries, only Hungary does better than Romania and ranks 10th in the world (last year it was 20th), with an average download speed of 99.74 Mbs. Bulgaria is on the 39th place (up 10 positions), with 46.22 Mbs, the Republic of Moldova on the 59th place (up one place), with 27.49 Mbs, Ukraine on the 92nd place (down from the 81st place last year), with 15.09 Mbs, and Serbia, on the 65th place (at the previous edition it was on the 43rd place) with 24.74 Mbs.

Romania has the fastest fixed broadband connections in Europe and ranks fifth in the world, with an average download speed of 167.8 Mbps, according to Ookla Speedtest data for July. However, mobile connections in Romania are not among the fastest, with an average download speed of 38.2 Mbps in July (45th place in the world), according to the same source.
