Only 1,800 Romanians living abroad use new electoral registration methods

04 July 2016

Over 1,800 Romanians living abroad have registered in the electoral register for the future parliamentary elections that will take place this year, three months after the onset of the registration period.

Some 1,300 people want to use mail voting whereas 506 want to vote in special polling sections organized near their residence.

Registration has begun on April 1, and will end about three months before the election date, that still needs to be set by law. Romanians living abroad still have about two months to complete the registration process.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has reminded the citizens living abroad that they have two new ways of casting their votes, besides the possibility to vote at the polling stations within diplomatic missions. These include the mail voting and voting at special polling stations set up on their demand near their residence place if there are at least 100 Romanian citizens living in the area.

“It is important that Romanians find out about these new provisions to register in the Electoral Register and vote abroad, avoid the queues and the problems that occurred in previous years,” said Dan Stoenescu, Minister – Delegate for Relations with Romanians Abroad.
