Young Romanian climbs the highest peak in Africa

Dor Geta Popescu, a young Romanian girl aged 12, has climbed Uhuru Peak (5,895m), Kilimanjaro, which is Africa’s highest peak.

“On Thursday, July 16, 10:15 Tanzania time, Dor Geta Popescu – athlete of the Romanian Federation of Escalade and Climbing – reached Uhuru Peak, 5,895m – Kilimanjaro, the highest peak of the African continent. Aged 12 years and one month, Geta is the youngest Romanian to succeed this, beating Alexandra Marcu and Crina Coco Popescu,” according to a statement cited by local Mediafax.

Dor Geta Popescu said that everything went great during this climbing, and she felt very well.

Dor Geta Popescu, aged 12, practices performance climbing as a member of Montan Altitudine Sports Club. She is part of the national children climbing team, being a national champion. She participates in mountain expeditions since she was 10. At the time of ascents, she set international age records on Mount Ararat (5,165m), Sabalan (4,811m), and Damavand (5,671m), as a member of Altitude Expeditions Team.

In less than three weeks, the Romanian will try to set a European age record on Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in the Caucasus Mountains and in Europe.
