Vodafone starts using 4G data network for voice calls, to implement interactive Call+ in Romania

05 November 2014

Vodafone Romania, the second largest mobile carrier in Romania, has started using a new voice technology Voice over LTE - or VoLTE, via its 4G network, thus improving the quality of the calls and offering more interactive options for the users, the company announced on Wednesday, November 5.

VoLTE uses the 4G data networks for voice traffic, unlike traditional mobile networks, which use different channels for voice and data. Vodafone Romania is among the first mobile operators in Europe to launch the VoLTE technology.

The company is also testing the Call+ service, based on the VoLTE technology, which allows the caller to add more information on the screen of the called person, such as call priority, the subject of the discussion and an image. This service also allows users to share multimedia content during the calls, which will be displayed on their devices. They will also be able to make the transition from voice calls to video calls and back without pause.

“Our technological development allows us to continue to innovate in voice services and to evolve from traditional calls to HD voice services and to the revolutionary Call+, via the VoLTE technology,” said Ravinder Takkar, president & CEO of Vodafone Romania.

The devices which are currently compatible with Vodafone’s Call+ service are Samsung Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z2 and Huawei Ascent P7, but the company is looking to expand the list.
