Unused train station in northern Romania, modernized with EUR 0.5 mln

07 October 2016

The Romanian authorities have modernized a train station in Campulung la Tisa commune in Maramures county, northern Romania, although no train has passed through this station in nine years, reports local Digi24.

The last passenger train arrived in this station in October 2007. It was coming from Ukraine, and the Romanian Border Police found contraband cigarettes in it. Although the local authorities wanted to seize the train, they finally decided to let it go back to Ukraine.

“From that day, no train has ever come here,” said Campulung la Tisa mayor, Fekete Ludovic.

However, the train station was modernized four years ago, following an investment of RON 2.2 million (some EUR 500,000). The money came from the state budget.

Not only the building was repaired, but also the fences. Moreover, 32 surveillance cameras were installed on the 2.5 km to the border with Ukraine. Also, four employees are currently keeping the station safe.

According to CFR Infrastructure, the train station’s modernization was included in the border security project, for Romania’s accession to Schengen, reports Digi24.
