Top 5 Romanian companies in 2014 vs. 2005

Automobile Dacia, OMV Petrom SA, Rompetrol Rafinare, Kaufland and British American Tobacco were the largest local companies last year, based on their financial results in 2014.

In 2005, car producer Automobile Dacia ranked fifth, with a turnover of RON 4.3 billion (almost EUR 1 billion).

In 2014, its turnover increased to EUR 4.2 billion, whereas the productions reached 339,000 units, reports local Ziarul Financiar. The majority - 90% of these go to exports. Dacia is the largest exporter in the local economy and the only industrial company in the top 5.

Oil & gas company OMV Petrom ranked 2nd in 2014, whereas it ranked first in 2005. Last year, it posted a turnover of EUR 3.7 billion, while ten years ago the business amounted to EUR 2.4 billion.

Rompetrol ranked third both in 2005 and 2014, but its turnover increased from EUR 1.2 billion to EUR 3 billion. Its ownership changed, from the Romanian state to the state oil company of Kazakhstan.

Retailer Metro Cash & Carry ranked fourth in 2005, with a EUR 1 billion turnover. However, in 2014 it disappeared from top 5, replaced by another retailer, Kaufland Romania, which posted a EUR 1.8 turnover.

British Amerrican Tobacco ranked fifth last year, with a EUR 1.5 billion turnover.
