The fast food battle: KFC becomes more profitable than McDonald’s in Romania

American fast food chains McDonald’s and KFC increased their sales in Romania in 2014 while their profits surged.

US Food Network, the company that holds the KFC franchise in Romania, had a net profit of EUR 5.51 million, 92% higher than in 2013, surpassing competitor McDonald’s Romania, which posted a net profit of EUR 3.72 million, up by 28%.

McDonald’s Romania posted a turnover of almost EUR 98 million, some 4% higher than in 2013, according to pubic data from the Finance Ministry. McDonald’s remains the biggest restaurant chain in Romania by sales. The American group has 67 restaurants in Romania, half of which are in Bucharest. It increased the number of employees by 60 last year, to 2,760.

The KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) franchise has been catching up in recent years. Last year, KFC increased its sales by 18% in Romania, to EUR 57 million. US Food Network added 500 employees to its payroll, reaching 2,000 employees in 2014, according to public data. Last year, the company focused on opening new drive-through restaurants.
