SMEs in Romania create almost half the country’s gross value added

The small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Romania produce 44% of the gross value added in the economy.

The percentage is lower than in the EU, where it reaches 59%, even if the SMEs have a similar share in the total number of companies. These reach 99.6% in Romania, and 99.8% in the EU, according to EY Romania.

The production, trade, construction, professional activities and transport sectors account for 70% of the total gross value added. The first three sectors employ 60% of the total number of people active in SMEs.

Some 66.2% of the employees in Romania work in SMEs, slightly under the EU level of 66.9%. Between 2008 and 2013, the number of workers in these companies increased by 2 percentage points, from 64% to 66%.
