Schengen accession, still a dream? German official says Romania will not join the border-free area in 2015

05 January 2015

Romania may again face opposition to entering the Schengen area, much like it has in the past few years.

Wolfgang Bosbach, the president of the Bundestag Committee on Internal Affairs, recently told the German newspaper Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung that Romania will not join the Schengen area in 2015. Bosbach, a member of the conservative party  the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) also stressed that Klaus Iohannis' election as president does not mean that the political situation in the country will change fundamentally, reports the German magazine Der Spiegel.

Wolfgang Bosbach's reaction comes after President Klaus Iohannis told the same newspaper, Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung, that he will work for Romania's accession to Schengen to take place this year.

Germany was one of the Schengen members that opposed Romania's accession to the Schengen saying the country had not made enough progress in fighting corruption and organized crime, writes Der Spiegel. Other countries took turn in opposing Romania's accession to the border-free area, which blocked the process for the country, as unanimity is needed before a new country can join Schengen.
