Romania’s Simona Halep goes to the semifinals of the tournament in Singapore

24 October 2014

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep qualified to the semifinals of the WTA Finals in Singapore winning the Red Group, although she lost her third match in the group, against Serbian Ana Ivanovic.

In the semifinals Halep will play against Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska, on Saturday.

Halep had already qualified to the semifinals of the competition in Singapore before her match against Ivanovici, after she beat Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, on Monday, and number one women’s tennis player Serena Williams, on Wednesday. The only thing at stake for her was to find out if she would qualify form the first place or from second place.

Halep started the match against Ana Ivanovici with a strong performance. She made it 5-2 in the first set and served for winning it, but the Serbian made an outstanding comeback and won the set after the tiebreak, 7-6. Halep, however, won the second set, 6-3, which helped American Serena Williams advance to the semifinals and sent home Ana Ivanovic, although she won the third set, 6-3, and the match as well.

In the other semifinal of the competition, Serena Williams will play against Swiss Caroline Wozniacki, who won all her matches in the White group, where her adversaries were Agnieszka Radwanska, Russian Maria Sharapova and Czech Petra Kvitova.
