Romania’s Simona Halep advances to the quarter finals of the China Open in Beijing

02 October 2014

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, currently second in the WTA ranking, managed to get the victory after a hard match against Germany’s Andrea Petkovic (No. 15 WTA) and made it to the quarter finals of the China Open in Beijing, one of the most important tournaments in the end of the WTA season.

She won in three sets ended 7-6, 5-7, 7-6, after playing for more than two and a half hours and winning two tiebreaks. In the quarter finals she will play against Serbian Ana Ivanovici or German Sabine Lisiki.

This is her best performance after almost three months of poor results. Halep has won her last tournament at the beginning of July, when she triumphed in the Bucharest Open, thus ending a great streak for her, during which she played the final at Roland Garros and semifinal in Wimbledon.

She didn’t rise to the expectations in the US Open, where she was eliminated in the third round. She was also eliminated quite fast in Wuhan.

However, due to the good results in the first part of the season, Halep will play in the WTA Finals in Singapore at the end of October that brings together the best eight players of the season.
