Romania's Government approves tax amnesty bill

14 May 2015

The Government approved on May 13 a draft law which cancels certain tax obligations, through an Emergency Ordinance.

Until Friday, it will submit it to the Parliament for urgent debate, according to Government spokesman Corneliu Calota.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta said that it was cheaper for the state to cancel certain tax obligations than to send the Tax Authority ANAF after the contributors who failed to pay their dues.

The fiscal amnesty will apply to taxpayers with very low revenues who failed to pay their health contributions.

The proposed measures would apply to some 4 million taxpayers. The bill would cancel the health contributions imposed between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2014 for people with revenues below the minimum wage.

The law would also apply to other tax obligations related to revenues from intellectual property rights, until June 1.
