The Social Democratic Party (PSD), now the ruling party in Romania together with ALDE, raised some RON 15 million (EUR 3.3 million) from contributions in 2016.

Over 30 Romanian MPs and 10 MEPs paid contributions that exceeded the level of ten gross minimum wages last year, reports local News.ro. These include finance minister Viorel Stefan, MP Catalin Radulescu, who was recently suspended from the party following violent statements about the protesters in the Victoria Square, as well as MEP Daciana Sarbu, who is married to former Prime Minister Victor Ponta.

In addition, 19 party members paid donations of over RON 500,000 (EUR 110,000) to the party. The most generous one was the current District 5 mayor Daniel Florea, who donated over RON 140,000 (EUR 30,100) last year. He also donated through his law firm. He was followed by Liviu Gheorghita Goncea, who is a local councilor in District 1.

Nine companies from Constanta, Ialomita, Cluj, Timis and Bucharest made donations above the level of ten gross minimum salaries, totaling RON 225,900 (EUR 50,000).
