The new global tax on households will be introduced in two or three stages, the first of which will begin starting January 1, 2018, said finance minister Viorel Stefan.

He added that the Government could give up the initial plan to use tax consultants to implement the new tax system, replacing them with an IT system, reports local Profit.ro.

The Finance Ministry plans to introduce a differentiated tax based on the global annual income of each household, which would range between 0 -10%. This means that the ministry could give up the 16% flat tax starting next year.

The Romanian Business Leaders, an organization that represents local entrepreneurs and investors, criticized the measure. Its representatives said that the draft laws on the unitary pay and the global tax on households were announced "without any impact and consultation study" and will "blow up the confidence in the Romanian state and the budgetary balance of Romania."
