Romanian SocDem leader: New global tax on households could be postponed

16 May 2017

The Government could postpone introducing the global tax on households by one year if it doesn’t find enough tax consultants in due time, said the Social Democrat leader Liviu Dragnea yesterday.

“We are not going to give up the new tax system because it is another system through which the middle class can develop,” Dragnea said at local TV station Antena 3.

He explained that the Government will analyze if it has enough time to establish a body of 35,000 tax consultants until 2018, the party’s initial deadline to change the tax system. If not, the whole project will be postponed by one year.

However, the Government will maintain the plan to remove taxes for people with individual incomes below RON 2,000 (EUR 439) starting 2018.

At the beginning of April, finance minister Viorel Stefan said that the government could introduce the global tax on households in 2018. He denied the fact that the government could remove the current flat tax, and said that it only plans to reduce it to 10% starting January 1, 2018. The minister also announced that the government wants to remove taxes for incomes below RON 2,000.

The new global household income tax system is dependent on finding 35,000 tax consultants that could help the population fill in their tax returns and would also collect the taxes for the state.
