Romania's energy consumption down 7.7 % while electricity production also down in first five months

The electricity consumption in Romania was down 7.7 percent in the first five months of the year compared to the same period of 2012, according to Romania's Statistics Institute. The total consumption was at 21 billion KWh. Public lightning consumption was down 9.1 percent, while household consumption, down 1.3 percent.

Primary energy resources were also down during this period – 14.2 percent, while electricity resources were also down, 7.1 percent.

The main primary energy resources in the first five months of the year totaled 12.2 million tonnes equivalent petrol (tep), down 2 million tep on the same period of 2012. Internal production stood at 8.9 million tep, down 7.1 percent, while Romania exported 3.3 million tep, a drop of almost 30 percent on the same period in 2012.

Meanwhile, the electricity resources were also down 7.1 percent, to 24 billion KWh, mainly caused by a drop in production. Thermal power plants produced 10 billion KWh, a drop by a quarter, while the production via hydro power plants was of 6.8 billion KWh, an 18 percent increase. The electricity production from nuclear power plants was of 4.7 billion KWh, a growth of 1.4 percent. Wind farms produced 2.1 billion KWh, almost double on the same period of 2012. Romania exported some electricity as well, some 480 million KWh, down by 16.8 percent on the same period in 2012.
