Romania’s central bank Governor: It’s harder to enter Bucharest than the Eurozone

28 May 2015

Romania’s central bank Governor Mugur Isarescu made an amusing remark on Thursday, after he arrived 30 minutes late to a conference where he was speaker, because he was stuck in traffic.

“I found out that it’s harder to enter Bucharest than the Eurozone,” Isarescu said, according to Hotnews.ro.

In his speech, he talked about Romania’s financial markets, which he considers “unbalanced” due to the banks’ domination.

“I could say we have a massive bank dominance in Romania’s financial system. About 80% or more of the total financial assets in Romania belong to banks. This is not necessarily an advantage, not even for us who represent the banking system,” Isarescu told the audience, according to Mediafax.

He added that it would be important even for banks to have more developed non-banking financial segments.
