23 May 2016

Romanian anticorruption prosecutors sent Baia Mare mayor Catalin Chereches to court on bribery charges, on Friday, May 20.

According to the DNA prosecutors, Chereches demanded and received a bribe of about EUR 15,500 to support a local football team with public funds between March and September last year. He also promised to offer the club about EUR 222,000-266,000 in exchange for a stake in a company.

The operation failed to complete so the mayor asked for EUR 88,700 from the man who later denounced him.

The anticorruption prosecutors caught the mayor red-handed.
