Balkan Physics Olympiad: Romanian students claim four medals at 2023 edition in Albania

Romanian high school students won gold, silver and bronze medals at the 5th Balkan Physics Olympiad (BPO) held in Albania last week, the Ministry of Education announced. The Romanian team comprised Ioana Stănoiu, Vlad Dorian Vulpe, Vladimir Nicolae, and Mario Cristian Scurtu.

Ioana Stănoiu from the International High School of Informatics in Bucharest claimed a gold medal, the ministry said. She was also awarded for the best score obtained by a participant and received a special prize for getting the maximum score in at least one subject.

Meanwhile, Vlad Dorian Vulpe from the Tudor Vladimirescu National College in Târgu Jiu and Vladimir Nicolae from the George Coșbuc National College in Bucharest grabbed silver medals. 

Mario Cristian Scurtu, a student at the Ecaterina Teodoroiu National College in Târgu Jiu, won the bronze medal.

The BPO5 competition was organized from June 23 to 25. According to its official website, the Balkan Physics Union member countries can officially participate in the contest, namely Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Greece, the Republic of Moldova, Romania, Serbia and Turkey. Other countries may also be invited as guest countries.
