Romanian tennis star Simona Halep, currently third in the WTA ranking of the best women’s tennis players in the world, made her debut at the Shenzen Open in China with a victory over Germany’s Annika Beck. This was Halep’s first match in 2015.

Halep lost the first set of her match against Beck 4-6, but made a comeback and won the following two sets 6-4, 6-3. She is the main favourite of the tournament which has USD 500,000 in prize money.

Another Romanian, Monica Niculescu, lost her first match in the Shenzen Open to Slovenian Polona Hercog, after two sets ended 6-1, 7-5 for the Slovenian.
