Romanian Simona Halep goes up in WTA rankings, gets Shot of The Month nomination

06 June 2016

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep went up one place in the WTA ranking of the best women’s tennis players in the world. She is now at number 5, with 4,471 points.

However, Halep is more than 1,000 points behind the world no. 4 Angelique Kerber, who has 5,620 points.

American Serena Williams is still the best female tennis player in the world, with 8,830 points, followed by Spanish Garbine Muguruza, this year's Roland Garros winner, with 6,766 points, and Polish Agnieszka Radwanska – 6,080 points.

Other Romanian players in top 100 are Irina-Camelia Begu (28th), Monica Niculescu (37th), and Sorana Cirstea (98th).

Simona Halep and Irina-Camelia Begu have also been nominated for May’s WTA Shot of the Month award. Tennis fans can cast their votes here. The results will be announced on June 10.

Halep lost in late-May her Roland Garros fourth round match against Australia’s Samantha Stosur. The game started three days earlier but was delayed due to heavy rain.
