Romanian, Serbian PM talk about highway from Belgrade to Timisoara

17 July 2014

Romania’s prime minister Victor Ponta and his Serbian counterpart Alexander Vucic recently agreed that the transport ministers of the two countries will establish by September 1 the best ways to finance a 100 kilometer highway between Serbia’s capital Belgrade and Timisoara, the largest city in Western Romania. The announcement was made after a meeting between the two officials that took place in Belgrade on Thursday, July 17.

“Together we can develop such infrastructure projects that haven’t been made between Romania and Serbia, I think, in 40 or 50 years,” said Ponta, quoted by Mediafax.

Vucic mentioned that the highway should have a length of 100 kilometers and that Serbia has problems in financing such a project due to its large public debt. He added that the energetic interconnections between the two countries are also important.

Some of these projects could be financed through European funds as part of the Danube Strategy.
