Romanian police have caught an Iranian attempting to sell ten kilograms of opium in Piatra Neamt. Romania's organized crime unit (DIICOT) is currently holding 44 year old Iranian national Badr Ali Daei Asghar Zadeh in custody. “The defendant, a member of a cross-border drug trafficking ring, was caught in the act, in Piatra Neamt, while trying to sell ten kilograms opium. The drugs had come from Turkey and were to cross Romanian territory en route to Germany, the final destination,” reads the police press release, quoted by news service Mediafax. The value of the opium seized is estimated at EUR 100,000.

The arrest follows months of joint investigations by Romanian and foreign police forces and a number of previous arrests. Again, Romania appears to be a staging post for drugs on their way to Western Europe. The Romanian police said the drug trafficking ring included Turkish, Iranian and German citizens.
