Romanian PM on official visit to Germany: Meeting with Merkel, with Deutsche Bank and investors interested in Romania

10 June 2013

Several large investors interested in investing in Romania will meet Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta (in picture), who is currently on an official trip to Germany, where he will also meet chancellor Angela Merkel. The focus of this meeting will be economic relations between Romania and Germany, followed by political relationships at European and regional levels.

Ponta did not mention the names of the German companies whose representatives he will meet while in Berlin on Monday and Tuesday, June 10 and 11. His agenda includes a meeting at Deutsche Bank and a debate with investors interested in Romania. Ponta's visit to Berlin is the most important such trip of his mandate as PM so far, and the first visit by a Romanian PM to Germany since 2006.

Local media sources however draw attention to the fact that Ponta's delegation to Berlin does not include any of the important Romanian investors, and that the list of people outside the Government attending this visit was not made public. According to Cristian Pârvan, the secretary of the Association of Businesspeople in Romania, the PM should have taken a large group of local investors with him, in the same way Angela Merkel does, or former French president Nicholas Sarkozy used to do, according to Ziarul Financiar.
