Romanian PM fires tax agency’s president, names woman for the job

19 July 2017

Romanian Prime Minister Mihai Tudose laid off yesterday Bogdan-Nicolae Stan, the president of the tax agency ANAF.

He named Mirela Calugareanu, the head of the Bucharest and Ilfov Directorate General of Public Finance, to take his place. She is the first woman to hold this position.

In June last year, the former ANAF head Dragos Doros brought her at ANAF’s Directorate General for Large Taxpayers. When Doros left ANAF, Calugareanu returned to the Bucharest Directorate General of Public Finance.

Former Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu appointed Bogdan-Nicolae Stan to lead ANAF in January. The new premier decided to lay him off, although he said one week prior that Stan had one month to prove his efficiency. Tudose argued that ANAF’s revenue collection is not good enough considering Romania’s economic growth from this year.

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Liviu Dragnea decided on Monday to cease the one-month assessment period and asked Tudose to analyze „very carefully and with maximum rigor" the ANAF activity. Dragnea also asked the PM to take the necessary measures to improve the institution’s activity.

ANAF collected over RON 100 billion (EUR 22.2 billion) in the first six months of 2017, 4% more than in the similar period of 2016. However, the Government’s budget for this year is based on a 14% increase in revenues compared to 2016.
