Romanian online retailer sells top gadgets for less than EUR 1, on technical error

24 November 2014

Romanian online retailer eMAG sold 730 electronic products for prices between RON 1 and RON 8 (EUR 0.22 – EUR 1.8) on Sunday evening, due to a technical error, losing some EUR 260,000 on this, the company announced on Monday, November 24.

“On Sunday evening, November 23, between 20:30 and 22:59, an error occurred when loading the prices for some of the resealed products sold by the company. As a result, a total of 730 products were sold for prices between RON 1 and RON 8,” according to a statement of the company.

For example a Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone could be bought for RON 1 (EUR 0.22), reduced from RON 1,449 (EUR 326), while a LED Smart TV 3D Philips, 117 cm, full HD, was reduced from RON 4,246 (EUR 960) to just RON 3 (EUR 0.67).

“We will absolutely honour all orders and the items will be shipped quickly,” said Iulian Stanciu, general manager eMAG.

The incorrect discounts totalled RON 1.15 million (some EUR 259,000). The largest discount, of some RON 11,190 (over EUR 2,500) was applied to a network device, a Cisco Catalyst 2960 switch, which could be purchased for just RON 8 (EUR 1.8) instead of RON 11,190 (EUR 2.520).

eMAG is the largest online retailer in Romania. The company had its largest sales event last weekend, Black Friday (Friday, November 21), in which it made some EUR 37 million worth of sales, more than it had estimated.
