Romanian Ilie Nastase joins Eurosport’s team of consultants for Roland Garros

17 May 2016

Romanian tennis legend Ilie Nastase will be part of Eurosport’s team of consultants for this year’s Roland Garros tournament.

Nastase, a former world No. 1 professional tennis player and winner of two Grand Slam tournaments, will join the team that also includes Chris Evert – who won 18 Grand Slams, and John McEnroe – the winner of seven Grand Slam single tournaments.

Ilie Nastase will offer his expertise and will moderate interviews made for the TV channel’s broadcasts in Romania. His comments as an expert will also be included in Eurosport’s broadcasts adapted for other countries, Eurosport announced.

“The arrival in Paris and the entry into the Roland Garros arenas always represent something special for me because I revive the wonderful memories of my victory here in 1973, but also the memories related to my first tournament of this kind, which happened 50 years ago,” Ilie Nastase said.

“I always liked to entertain the fans where I was on the tennis court, and I can’t wait also to do it on the screen with the Eurosport team.”

Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam of the year, will take place between May 22 and June 5 in Paris.

Last year, five Romanians entered the first round of the tournament, in the women’s competition, namely Simona Halep, Irina Begu, Alexandra Dulgheru, Monica Niculescu and Andreea Mitu.

While Halep was eliminated in the second round of the tournament, Irina Begu played the third round.
